Cloudy Urine – Symptoms, Causes, Treatment


What is Cloudy Urine?

A cloudy urine simply means the urine is not in its normal color. A healthy urine has a clear and light yellow color. A cloudy urine may be brought about by various reasons; it can be because of an underlying disease condition or it can be because of the food that one eats. In cases wherein persistent clouding of the urine exist, then the clouding would be an indication of an underlying disease. Among which are vaginal discharges from diseases of the reproductive system, sexually transmitted diseases, infection and inflammation from the different organs in the body, autoimmune disorders, and other conditions of the urinary system.

Cloudy Urine Symptoms

The following are the common symptoms of cloudy urine which are associated with infection or diseases of the urinary tract.

  • Abdominal and flank pain
  • Dark-colored urine or tinged with blood
  • Lower abdominal pain or cramps secondary to bladder spasm
  • Incontinence or dribbling of urine
  • Urine is foul-smelling
  • Increased frequency of urination or decreased in urination
  • Burning pain in urination

Symptoms that coexist with conditions affecting other body systems:

  • Fever
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Edema on the dependent parts of the body such as the legs, and it may also occur in the abdomen, arms, and the face
  • Lymph node swelling
  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain
  • Vaginal or penile discharges

Life-threatening symptoms that need to be taken seriously:

  • Blood in urine
  • Change in the level of consciousness, e.g. fainting or unresponsive
  • Change in the level of mental alertness and behavioral changes such as confusion, delirium, lethargy and hallucinations
  • Disorientation
  • Fever of more than 101 °F
  • Difficulty or inability to urinate
  • Seizure
  • Severe abdominal or flank pain
  • Chills

Cloudy Urine Causes

As often, a cloudy urine is usually caused by infection or inflammation of the different organs in the system most especially the urinary tract system and the reproductive organs. It may also be caused by certain diseases such as diabetes or heart problems.

Associated with problems in the urinary and the reproductive systems:

  • Cancer of the bladder
  • Protein in the urine
  • Inflammation of the bladder or cystitis
  • Kidney stones and kidney failure
  • Glomerulonephritis or inflammation of the small blood vessels of the kidney
  • Preeclampsia –this is a serious condition experienced by pregnant women marked by edema, hypertension, and the presence of protein in the urine.
  • Pregnancy
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Infections in the urinary tract

The following are the other causes of a cloudy urine:

  • Hypertension or any conditions affecting the cardiovascular system
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Dehydration
  • Diabetes
  • Leukemia
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Strenuous exercises

Cloudy Urine Treatment

The ideal thing to do when the urine is cloudy is to consult the physician for thorough examination. Since a cloudy urine can be caused by various reasons, it is always recommended that tests should be done to correctly establish the treatment needed, specific for each underlying cause. In cases of infection, it is usually managed by antibiotics and diuretics medication.

Aside from controlling the situation using medical management, there are also home treatments that can be very useful in conjunction with medical management:

  1. Boiling a few seeds of the coriander. Let the solution cool for a few minutes and strain the mixture to separate the leaves. Drink the about two ounces of the liquid at least two times a days.
  2. Drinking cranberry juice several times a day is also believed to provide good results.
  3. A home remedy for urinary tract infection is by mixing one-half tablespoon of baking soda and water. Stir the mixture well and drink. Urinary tract infection is one of the most common causes of cloudy urine so this is one good way to manage the condition.
